MATCH REPORT | Ammanford 2-1 Penrhyncoch

The Roosters bow out of the Nathaniel MG Cup at the first hurdle after a disappointing 2-1 loss at the Recreation Ground.


The game started fairly evenly with both teams having an equal amount of ball possession and attacks. Ammanford got the goalscoring started early though, after Gavin Jones finished expertly into the top corner from inside the box to put the hosts ahead after ten minutes.


A dangerous looking run from Guto Huws looked promising for the Roosters but Ammanford defended well and eventually cleared.


With Ammanford really starting to look on top, winger Bruno Forkuoh looked like he was going to get the second for the hosts, but he blazed his effort over the bar for a goal kick.


Steff Gittins broke into the box after a neat little through ball from Guto Huws, but Craig Morris stood up and saved in which was the Roosters' best chance in the first half.


Heartbreak for the Roosters as Gavin Jones got the his second of the game after Bruno Forkouh did well to get deliver a cross to the clinical Jones, who finished well into the bottom corner. 2-0 Ammanford after thirty six minutes.


The Roosters responded well after new signing Lance Jones tried his luck, trying his luck from outside the box which fizzled wide.


Four minutes later, Jon Evans was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Benjamin Soal.


The second half started as the first one ended as Ammanford were determined to pick up where they left off against a stubborn Penrhyn side who felt they were still in the game. Lance Jones out-strengthed a Ammanford player which sent him down in the box, but the referee Teifion Cook waved the penalty protests away.


Penrhyn had another good chance as Steff Gittins played a neat through ball to Jon Evans who turned his man well inside the box but couldn't convert his effort as he fired it over the bar.


Moments later, Craig Morris denied Ifan Burrell with his feet with a fine reaction save to keep the Black and Whites two ahead.


Ammanford looked close to adding a third, but a fine fingertip save from Roosters' 'keeper Leigh Jenkins denied a low effort from Craig Frater.


On the 80th minute, another superb save from Jenkins denied Ammanford and Gavin Jones their third goal who held his low drive.


At this point Penrhyn really started to find their form. Lance Jones' brilliant lofted cross finds the head of towering midfield substitute Carwyn Morgan who headed it in at the back post. 2-1, game on!


Penrhyn worked hard to try and find an equaliser to take the tie to penalties, but it was just not our day, the referee blew the final whistle and left the Roosters feeling dejected.


A valiant effort from a spirited new look Roosters side against a strong Ammanford side. Our attentions now turn to our first match of the new Cymru North season as we travel to Llanrheadr on August 17th. See you there!
